Speed read: Sylvatica is a specialist ecological consultancy set up in 2010. I was approached by the owner at the start of the year to design an identity, website, business cards and stationary.
In detail: Sylvatica has been a longer than usual project with half of the work scheduled in prior to departing the country to travel Asia and other other half for completion on my return. The client was happy about this as it gave him time to write the pending copy and to resource images from his previous jobs - win win.
This was a great job for me as I had a blank canvas to work with. My approach was to first tackle the logo and colour pallete befor looking at the possibillites for the rest of the project. Knowing exactly nothing about ecological consultancey I spent quite a lot of time talking over the job role with the client, perusing a couple of reports and a variety of industry magazines. There are two visual cues which inspired the logo. The first of which is the formation of marques found on a scatter-graph, which are offen found in ecological surveys. The second hints at a body of creatures, bacteria or other microscopic beings. Both of these ideas have both scientific and links to nature. The subtle shades of green are a further cue to tie nature and science togeather. To complete the logo I chose a light, tidy, sans serif, creating a clean professional 'consultancy' look. Somthing I am particularly pleased with is the use of the font face tag which has allowed the use of the custom type-face online as well as on the prin materials.
