Intern / Print design / Typography / Layout / Artworking //
Speed read: Straight after graduating was offer a 6 week internship with HDR Visual Communication who are well known for publishing Baseline Magazine. Working at HDR was a great learning experience covering both agency work and magazine / publication work.
In detail: During my time at HDR I worked on Baseline issue 57, laying out and designing an 8 page spread for Dutch designer Ben Boss, who’s feedback on my layout was very positive. I also worked on the book review and other sections of the magazine, which required me to follow more of a set formula, but still posed many design problems to over come. I also worked on stationary & identity for a building company Copeland Developments. All of these items made it to signoff & press.
HDR is owned and directed by Hans Dieter Reichert, an international character and expert in the world of typography and design. He is a fantastic person to work with and learn from. Only the highest standard work was used, critiquing and reviewing and re-reviewing was the norm until everything was spot on.
I found his views on design fascinating and opened my eyes to many things I hadn’t considered before. I remember conversations about making coffee and brick walls but after some reflection learning lessons about clear communication and holistic design.
Beyond his professional side, Han’s a very sociable chap making HDR a fun and enjoyable place to work. Despite finishing my placement quite a while ago, now and again I meet with the HDR crew for a pint and chat over our latest and greatest.
