Speed read: Do is a self initiated brief which addressed a sigificant thought in my last year at Uni: This second to last project brief I’d ever write at university, was it going to be a commercial project?.. nope.
In detail:Do has no brief, no goal, no solution, no final outcome. It is simply a container for visual possibilities or putting it another way; just doing things. Why worry about a commercial project while I still had the choice to do what I wanted? Do celebrates the grey mist between the brief and the solution, the most important part of the design process, where there are no rules, parameters, or guides, just possibilities. I set out to do nothing more than create and explore. In places this process has lead to a conclusion or commentary to punctuate my thoughts. But this copy should only be treated as the start of a conversation, and not a lesson, rule or mandate of Graphic Design.
As well as giving me infinite opportunity and breadth of work to cover, ,Do also allowed me to take time to learn some new skills such as screen printing, & large format photography. Although ‘Do’ is a very free spirited project, there where still many problems to be solved in the production stage.
It wasn’t in the spirit of the project to produced a highly polished outcome, yet I wanted there to be some sort of container to consolidate all of the artwork. I decided to create a loose container printed on double sided A2 spreads, with overlays, gatefolds and transparencies. This allowed the pages to be taken out, turned, overlaid, reordered creating even more possibilities in terms of the artwork and the viewers approach. Since Uni ‘Do’ is my play thing and is an on going project which I continue to add to and dabble with at my leisure.
