Speed read: Design surrounds us every where, yet we rarely stop to consider or appreciate it. Details is a specialized magazine about really looking at the environment we have built around our selves, thinking, reflecting and enjoying the details of it.
In detail:In some ways design is unremarkable, it’s found everywhere in every object and place in our environment and it is because of this ubiquity we come to take it for granted. Details is about using a heightened sense of visual awareness to look beyond the ordinary pattern of acceptance with-out-question and to find things and places that are a little bit special.
This issue ‘Urban special’ looks at a number of urban flavours in the aim of rejuvenating interest in what’s right on your doorstep. From thoughts on the humble light bulb to a full case study of the defining urban material concrete. Bundled with the magazine I produced a small booklet which looked at a range of everyday objects that make life a hell of a lot easier without us even thinking about it. Each object is isolated on white so we can try and see it in a new way with out the daily clutter and baggage that goes with it.
Details & Object was a massive undertaking and I think the amount of work which goes into a magazine or any port of publication is often forgotten.. along with time keeping and managing, designing all the elements & pages, I wrote every word bar one article, took the photography, did the proofing, printing, and binding.. I even worked out how to emboss the cover by experimenting with acid etching on zinc plates. All considered I learnt a hell of a lot with this project and gained... a huge insight into what it takes to produce a magazine or publication of any sort.
